"Biotechnology is the science that uses living organisms or their parts (tissues, cells, sub-cellular organelles) to obtain products of social and economic interest not achievable with other technologies."

Biotechnological research operates at an intersection employing advanced knowledge of the mechanisms of functioning of living organisms with the most advanced technologies available in biology, chemistry, physics and other disciplines, to obtain results with an extraordinary biomedical, chemical and pharmaceutical, industrial, agro-food and environmental impact.

The Department of Cellular Biotechnologies and Hematology, established by the Rector through decree 12.30.82, promotes and coordinates research activities in the field of clinical hematology and biotechnology, focusing on basic biological research; molecular and human, general and cellular genetics; clinical biochemistry, pathology and experimental hematology.
